3rd Annual Kids Day to promote health, safety, crime prevention

67

This year’s Kids Day Maricopa will be held on Saturday at Maricopa Wells Middle School from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Dr. John Donohue, D.C., will be hosting this third annual event, a health, safety and environmental awareness day. Mayor Anthony Smith recently signed a proclamation declaring Sept. 18 as Kids Day and will be speaking there during the afternoon.

Essential information on crime prevention, child safety and environmental awareness will be available at Kids Day Maricopa. Maricopa Police Department will be on hand to provide free fingerprinting for children, and officers will be bringing police cars, motorcycles, the K-9 Unit and possibly a police helicopter.

Additionally, there will be special appearances by “Smokey the Bear” and other fire and crime characters. Maricopa Fire Department is bringing a fire truck and smoke house; fire fighters will teach fire safety tips and seatbelt safety.

Donohue will provide free health screenings and vital information on disease prevention and health promotion.

Other topics during the day’s activities will be bicycle safety, drug awareness, Internet safety, healthy eating and exercise.  ATA Karate Kids will provide a stranger-danger and safety demonstration, and  Desert Sun Performing Arts and Desert Star Gymnastics will perform, offering a keep fit program.

“We will also provide free balloons, free food and fun for everyone along with information form many other participants. There will be special give-a-ways and free prize drawings throughout the event. In addition, we are looking to start a D.A.R.E. program in Maricopa,” said Donohue.

The event is free, and especially exciting for Kids Day Maricopa will be the clown team of Sgt. Pepper & GooBurr, who will be performing and teaching the children about stranger danger.

“We encourage the entire community to join us by participating Saturday at this unique, fun-filled community awareness event,” said Donohue.
