Broadway Curve project forces more I-10 closures as phase 2 begins

As phase 2 of the Interstate 10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project gets underway, a section of I-10 near Sky Harbor International Airport will be closed again this weekend as construction work continues.

Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and plan to use detours if traveling on I-10 in the East Valley, as the westbound lanes of the freeway will be closed between US 60 and SR 143 from 10 p.m. Friday until 4 a.m. Monday, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. The closure will enable crews to continue work on the new Broadway Road bridge.

This closure is one in a series of planned weekend closures this summer and fall as crews make significant progress on the construction of the new Broadway Road and 48th street bridges.

In addition to the westbound lane closures, the following ramps also will be closed:

• The ramps to westbound I-10 from westbound US 60 and southbound SR 143
• The westbound I-10 on-ramps between Elliot and Broadway roads
• The westbound US 60 on-ramps between McClintock Drive and Mill Avenue

ADOT recommends drivers use the eastbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway or US 60 to the northbound Loop 101 Price Freeway to the westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway to access westbound I-10.

Drivers heading to the West Valley can bypass the work zone by using the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway west and north to connect with I-10 at 59th Avenue.

To get to Sky Harbor, ADOT recommends motorists use the Sky Harbor Boulevard entrance to the airport off the Red Mountain Freeway. Travelers also should allow extra travel time due to the detours.
