Birthday party draws several hundred Dr. Seuss fans

Dr. Seuss would have been thrilled with the turnout for his birthday party at the Maricopa Public Library on Saturday.

About 200 Maricopa children turned out for the celebration in the first hour alone, and there were lots of activities to keep them interested and involved.

The Cat in the Hat walked around the library, visiting with children and their parents. Seuss character activity sheets, as well as games to guess the number of rainbow-colored goldfish in a bowl or the number of green eggs in a container, were available to all. The prizes were various Dr. Seuss books.

Auntie Pooh and her helper, Mama Oompa, painted faces, many resembling cuter versions of the Grinch.

Story time during the morning session featured “Horton Hears a Who;” “Green Eggs and Ham” was the title for the afternoon story time.

In addition to the Dr. Seuss-themed activities, children also received balloons, courtesy of ACE Hardware and cookies from Fry’s Marketplace as they left the library.

And, of course, many of those children and their parents left the Dr. Seuss birthday party with an armload of books.
