Peg Chapados announced her candidacy for the city council Tuesday.

“I was appointed to council in November 2012. It has been my privilege serving the residents of Maricopa and I would be honored to continue in that role,” Chapados said in a press release.

A Maricopa resident since 2006, Chapados is a community volunteer and advocate for planned growth, increased and improved citizen engagement and raising the bar for those serving their communities, according to the press release.

She has served on several council boards, committees and commissions before her current appointment to the council and since.

While president of The Villages HOA, Chapados co-created and chaired the Maricopa HOA Presidents Council, which brought together HOA board members with city leaders to discuss such issues as vandalism, graffiti, fire, drowning and crime prevention.

Chapados' leadership affiliations include Maricopa Seniors, Maricopa Business Council, For Our City and Maricopa Police Foundation. She currently serves on the city’s budget, finance and operations committee, as well as the marketing and communication committee.

She is a Maricopa Advocate Program member and council liaison to Maricopa Arts Council, the city’s planning and zoning commission, the parks, recreation and library advisory committee and the zoning code re-write task force.

In her press release, Chapados said she played a key role in opposing efforts to Global Water’s rate increase, advocating membership in the Maricopa Association of Governments, supporting city management of Copper Sky, working on major revisions to the Non-Profit Funding Program, and helped to create the council’s new ethics code.

She said her goals are: communicating, collaborating, connecting and creating solutions. She is interested in public-safety services; recruiting and retaining staff; encouraging effective economic development and “adopting a fiscally-responsible budget.”

“The role of council member in Maricopa is extremely important,” Chapados said in her press release. “It is a full-time job which carries tremendous responsibility. Maximum effectiveness requires dedication, diligence and the willingness to do your research. The best outcomes are possible only when council members devote the time required, are informed and engaged.”
