Committee appointments, fundraiser approvals on City Council agenda

In keeping with the city’s new policy on boards, commissions and committees, the Maricopa City Council will vote on approving nominated members to serve on several volunteer sub-groups at its regular meeting Tuesday.

The new policy states citizens must be appointed by a councilmember and approved by a majority to serve on a committee, commission or board. Groups that will have members up for approval at Tuesday’s meeting include the Parks, Recreation and Library Advisory Committee, Transportation Committee, Heritage District Citizens’ Advisory Committee, Planning and Zoning Commission and the Board of Adjustment.

• Forty-two young people may also be approved to serve on the Maricopa Youth Council. Youth council members represent the city’s teens and their needs and desires to the city council. Last year, they gave a presentation showing the council what amenities their peers would like to see in the multigenerational facility.

Fall will be filled with community events, and the council is set to vote on approving several of them at the meeting, including:

Stagecoach Days, which will take place Oct. 19 through Oct. 21 at Pacana Park. The event will include Frazer’s Carnival, group performances, stagecoach rides, a beer garden, community picnic and live music.

• Grape Escape, the annual wine-tasting fundraiser hosted by F.O.R. Maricopa, the city’s largest food bank and resource center, to be held Oct. 12 at Province.

• The Hog Roast, a fundraiser put on by Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church Oct. 27 at the church. Proceeds will go to the parish’s church building fund, which will help complete the first phase of the parish’s planned community.

Several projects will continue to move forward through the bureaucratic process pending council approval.

• The planned City Hall complex will be one step closer to its expected completion date should the council approve water and sewer easements with Global Water Resources.

• Maricopa Community Church could soon have a new office building if the council approves the site plan for it. The 1,255-square-foot building would be located at the southwest corner of Hathaway Avenue and Justin Drive.

• The Sonoran Creek master planned community is getting its bureaucratic ducks in a row with the pending approval of an intergovernmental agreement between the city and the Pinal County Flood Control District to maintain flood improvements in the project.
