The city of Maricopa issued an award to a Maricopa High School alumnus who recently returned home from serving in Afghanistan during Tuesday night’s city council meeting.

Council members and Maricopa residents rose to their feet to applaud Army Spc. Chance Ramsay, 20, who returned to Maricopa Saturday.

Mayor Christian Price presented Ramsay with the award as part of Operation Welcome Home, a city program honoring members of the military returning home.

Price read from the plaque he gave to Ramsay, saying, “Be it hereby known, the city council and the city of Maricopa, as part of the city of Maricopa’s Operation Welcome Home, is proud to recognize Spc. Chance Ramsay on the 21st day of January 2014 for his service to his country in the United States Army and for his safe return to Maricopa from oversees deployment.”

“Let’s welcome him home,” Price said after presenting the plaque.

Ramsay, an Arizona native, moved to Maricopa in 2009 and graduated from MHS in 2011. He enlisted in the Army in September 2011.

He will travel soon to Maryland to await his next assignment.
