Maricopa City Council announced today intentions to cease its participation with the Maricopa Economic Development Alliance effective July 1.
This decision stems from a thorough evaluation of various factors, including technological advancements, market trends, fiscal responsibilities, and changes in the state and federal political landscape affecting local governance, according to a press release.
“This decision is not taken lightly, and we remain committed to the economic well-being of Maricopa,” said Mayor Nancy Smith.
The city estimates the decision to bring a cost savings of more than $650,000 annually and the ability to grow an Office of Economic Vitality. The city will continue the employment of MEDA President and CEO Christian Price, as well as MEDA Economic Director Rachel Leffall, effective April 1.
Councilmember Vincent Manfredi called the decision a “win-win” scenario for the city and MEDA.
“Bringing the staff of MEDA in-house to work even more closely with city staff will streamline operations and help Maricopa meet the needs of the community and the businesses looking to locate in Maricopa,” he said. “It is a win-win situation.”
Founded in 2009, MEDA is a 501(c)3 corporation that acts as a business and economic development partner for the city with the goal is to attract industry.
