Family dog shot; owner searching for clues

Shelly Rogers came home Thursday to find her two-year-old dog, Shakei, bloodied and cowered underneath her house.

“I got her cleaned up and bandaged to try to stop the bleeding,” Rogers stated. “She had a pea-size wound on the inside of her right hind leg and a little gash on her left hind leg.”

The next morning Rogers took Shakei to the vet where she learned the dog’s leg was shattered and in need of immediate surgery. A surgeon later confirmed that Shakei had been shot, forcing Rogers to make “the hardest decision,” okaying surgery to amputate the dog’s leg.

“For somebody to deliberately do this to a family pet is heart breaking,” said Rogers, who suspects a neighbor in the shooting and is asking the community for any information about the incident.

“We’ve got a couple of rough weeks ahead of us,” Rogers said after bringing Shakei home Sunday, “but she should have a full recovery after the stitches are removed.”

Rogers bought Shakei at Stage Stop when the puppy was just three-months-old and refers to the mix-breed dog as a “Maricopa pure bred.”

The incident occurred near the 42000 block of South 80th Lane in Mobile and is being investigated by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. If you have any information about this crime, please contact the Sheriff’s Office at (602) 876-1865. Rogers can be reached via email at [email protected].
