FBI takes over bank robbery investigation

The FBI Violent Crimes Task Force has taken over the investigation of the Aug. 14 bank robbery at the Desert Financial Credit Union branch inside Fry’s Marketplace at 20797 N. John Wayne Pkwy.

The suspect is well known to law enforcement and has been dubbed the ‘Back Again Bandit’ by the FBI for having returned to rob three locations multiple times. According to the FBI, he robbed the U.S. Bank inside Fry’s at 9900 S. Rural Road in Tempe on Dec. 30 and Jan. 15, the U.S. Bank branch inside Safeway at 4005 E. Chandler Blvd. in Ahwatukee on Jan. 26, Feb. 5, and March 2, and the U.S. Bank location inside Safeway at 3800 W. Happy Valley Road in Phoenix on April 21, June 11 and July 29.

In all, FBI spokesperson Brooke Brennan said the man is suspected of robbing 13 Valley banks since Dec. 30.

The FBI said the subject approached a teller and presented a demand note in each of the robberies, and no one has been injured.
