Political leaders and Maricopa’s police and fire departments helped commission a new flagpole at city hall this morning. City staff and a few community members were also on hand for the ceremony.

Mayor Kelly Anderson called the flag a “symbol of hope, strength, leadership and compassion” and promised to wave the inaugural flag on Statehood Day (Feb. 14), Flag Day (June 14) and Founders Day (Oct. 15) each year.

The flag was presented by Maricopa Police Department’s color guard, which made its public debut at the ceremony. Fire Department Maricopa’s Pipes & Drums also performed.

“Today’s event marks a watershed for Maricopa,” Pinal County Supervisor David Snider told the crowd of a few dozen in the city hall parking lot. “Maricopa is proud of itself. Maricopa is part of the larger picture. Maricopa will continue to be one of the best cities in Arizona.”

Vice-Mayor Brent Murphree gave the concluding remarks, saying, “I for one am proud to be standing under this flag.”

Among the attendees was Bud Ryan, commander of Maricopa’s Veterans of Foreign Wars post, who said he was glad to be a part of the flag-raising, calling it “a very auspicious occasion.”
