Gas leak closes Taft Ave. near MHS

Police shut down Taft Ave. for about an hour on Tuesday afternoon after a citizen reported a gas leak.

A gas leak caused by construction work on Taft Ave. resulted in the closure of the street for about an hour Tuesday afternoon.

Southwest Gas and Maricopa Fire and Medical Department responded to the situation, which took place one block west of Maricopa High School and immediately east of the Maricopa Meadows housing development. No injuries have been reported.

According to Maricopa Police Department spokesman Sgt. Hal Koozer, the school day was not affected by the issue, and no one was forced to evacuate the school or its grounds.

As of 4 p.m. the street had reopened. Maricopa Unified School District has not yet responded to inquiries about the incident.
