The Maricopa Unified School District Governing Board approved $110,000 for Maricopa High School to remodel and upgrade security to the school’s lobby.
The remodel is only planned for the front entrance of MHS by the school’s administration offices. The remodel is intended to provide a more secure area for parents, students and staff.
“The remodel will provide a more secure entrance,” MUSD superintendent Steve Chestnut said. “We’re trying to make our offices friendly, but more secure at the same time.”
This will be the second time the MHS lobby will require work over the last two school years. During the 2014-15 school year, the MHS lobby flooded. However, any damage from the water was repaired and will not have any effect on the remodel.
“This decision was not because of the flooding last year,” Chestnut said. “All of the damage from that was repaired, and the costs were covered by insurance.”
SBD Contracting Services was selected to carry out the remodel. No start date has been set yet, but the district is hopeful work will begin in the next few months.
“We just created a [contract] with the contractor and now they will order their materials and fabricate some of the new entrance for installation,” MUSD Director of Business Services Aron Rausch said. “We have not yet established with the contractor a timeline. We hope they will start installation within the next few months.”
