Gusse: Thank you Ak-Chin for entertainment center

It is no coincidence that November is Native American Heritage Month. As Thanksgiving approaches, we begin to think of the warm memories of our loved ones, and perhaps enjoy a plump turkey and some good football games with those that matter most.

It is also a time in which we celebrate the history of this great nation — especially the beginning of it, when the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Native Americans sat down, enjoyed the blessings of harvest, friendship, and family.

Though we are a long way from Plymouth Rock, the culture, rich ancestry, and traditions of Native Americans are all around us. Bordering Maricopa are our friends from the Ak-Chin Indian Community. Just a few miles north, we have the Gila River Indian Community. In Arizona alone, we have 21 federally recognized tribes that provide a tremendous depth to our southwestern culture.

Raised in Los Angeles, I wasn’t always provided the enriched experience as the children of Maricopa have. In their everyday lives, they are able to learn about the Tohono O’odham culture and best of all, they are able to build friendships that will last a lifetime.

Since living in the area, I have taken every opportunity to learn more about our friends, appreciate a community that has thrived despite the rugged lifestyle needed to endure the southwestern desert, and the perseverance to move past the turbulence of our intertwined histories.

I have visited their community library, recreation center and spent a few afternoons at the Ak-Chin Him-Dak Museum. I can also say I’ve enjoyed a few events at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Resort. The casino provides not only great entertainment, but for many adults it has been that convenient getaway spot to relax and enjoy some fine dining. The Ak-Chin casino has also been a major component to our economy as it has been one of the largest employers.  They have also graciously contributed to our local school system.

Added to this, the Ak-Chin Indian Community is taking the first steps in providing us a convenient getaway spot for the entire family to enjoy. This week’s groundbreaking for a family entertainment center is much needed and a step forward. If you have children, you know it has been a financial strain to leave Maricopa so that the kids can have something to do.

Not only that, for a majority of residents it’s just exhaustive to commute back-and-forth from the Valley, then having to return on your off-time. This entertainment center is a missed opportunity for the city of Maricopa, but it is not a loss for the residents (like myself) that have been patient and that have kept hope.

I congratulate and thank the Ak-Chin Indian Community for making it happen. This will only enhance our regional area bring jobs to the community and makes us that much more attractive to families.

In the end, it will also afford us more opportunities to visit and learn from our neighbors, giving us a deeper appreciation for our histories. Native Americans are passionate, determined people who are playing a momentous role in enriching our communities.

Have a great and safe Thanksgiving!
