Legacy Traditional School opening reset for Aug. 27

Students attending the Legacy Traditional School have the chance to get a few more days of sleep or enjoy some extra fun in the sun.

The opening of school has been pushed back to Monday, Aug. 27, due to delays in obtaining permits to complete on-site work.

A meeting to update parents and answer questions about the delay was held earlier this week. The meeting looked at P.A.L.S. (Parents Assisting Legacy School), the first day of school, pick-up and drop-off procedures and more. Legacy Traditional School offers curriculum in grades K-6.

Executive Director Aaron Hale told parents in an email earlier in the week that the new portables are finished being built and have begun to arrive at the site. Hale said the delivery of the portables was postponed two weeks due to delays in the permitting process at the city. The city this week issued some permits allowing work on the site to move forward.

Nicole Dailey of the city’s planning department said the school was issued their temporary use permit, along with permits for grading and drainage and underground utilities. “They have yet to submit for their building and electrical permits,” Dailey said. “Those are ones they have not yet submitted for, so they don’t have those issued yet.”

Hale said school officials were very sorry for the delay in starting classes.

“We have done all that we can and will continue to work for an exceptional school,” Hale told parents. Hale indicated all of the teachers, aides and office staff has been hired and are in training. “In short, we have done all within our power to be ready for school and apologize for the inconvenience that this change may cause you,” Hale added.

Running now through Aug. 10, teacher training will be held to highlight different courses, along with going over the school’s policies and procedures.

Meet the Teacher night will be held Friday, Aug. 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. on the school’s campus at 19287 N. Porter Road (across the street from Pacana Park).
