Library’s summer program encourages residents to ‘Make a Splash’ by reading

“Make a Splash—Read.” That’s the theme of the Maricopa Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, and registration for it started on May 1.

The program runs from June 1 to Aug. 7, so participants who register in May won’t be able to start recording reading hours until June 1.

The program is open to anyone, age five and older, with a Maricopa Public Library card, including adults. The goal is for each participant is to read at least 30 hours.

Children and young adults will receive incentive prizes for every ten hours they read up to 30 hours. Once they read 30 hours, their name will be placed in the grand prize drawing. For every 10 hours they read after 30, their name will be placed in the drawing an additional time.

Adults who read 30 hours will have their name placed in the grand prize drawing, and for every 10 hours they read after 30, their name will be placed in the drawing an additional time. Adults will not receive incentive prizes.

“We had a little over 300 participants for the Winter Reading Program, and we hope to have 500 for this year’s Summer Reading Program,” said library assistant Heather Kennedy, who is in charge of the program. “We are still finalizing the grand prizes.”

Residents have two options in registering for the program:

Those with access to the Internet are encouraged to register for the program online at http://host9.evanced.info/maricopa/sr/homepage.asp. In addition to logging their reading hours online, they can also rate books, write book reviews and read other participants’ book reviews.

Those without access to the Internet can fill out a paper registration form available at the library. Participants who choose to register this way will record reading hours with paper logs, also available at the library.
