Local youth hopes to make his dream become reality

Tyler Mejic is 12 years-old. He will be a sixth grader next year at Pima Butte Elementary. He loves bike riding, football, animals, school and spending time with his friends. Those interests are pretty typical for a boy his age. What is not typical is Tyler’s interest in America’s government and his enthusiasm for learning about its history.

Tyler and his family, single mom Jennifer Williford and his two younger brothers, have lived in Maricopa for two years. Describing Tyler, his mom said, “He is just a big-hearted boy and a great son. I am lucky to be his mom. I want so much for this for him.”

Earlier this month Tyler received a nomination to attend the week-long Junior National Leaders Conference in Washington, D. C. beginning September 24. The letter indicates that his selection was based on his academic achievement and his leadership potential.

An honor roll student in the gifted program at Maricopa Elementary School, where he recently received awards for excellence in reading, spelling and social studies, Tyler wants to make his dream become a reality. “I just want to learn more about the government and study about its history,” he explained.

Dr. Donna Snyder, director of educational programs for the conference, stated, “We have been told Tyler has the strength of character and leadership ability that will allow him to get the most out of this unparalleled opportunity. As a delegate to this conference Tyler will gain the kind of experience and perspective that will benefit him throughout his secondary education and beyond.”

Students attending the leadership conference will be focusing on the eight key concepts of leadership, leadership throughout history, in colonial times and in war and peace. They will tour all the nation’s memorials. Participants will also learn about practicing leadership, taking those lessons home to their schools and communities.

Tyler’s fifth grade teacher, Nancy Rollins, explained, “As a teacher, I pick students that show they have interest in government or community and who continue to set high examples for their class in both academics and character. I was able to nominate six children this year. Two other students from the Maricopa area have participated in this program in the past.”

Tyler needs to raise $1,800 for his tuition fees plus his airfare and food money by July 29. Last Saturday a benefit car wash was held at Bank of America for Tyler. That event raised $426. A second car wash is scheduled for this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the same location. Volunteers are needed.

Cans for donations to help Tyler achieve his goal are available at Bashas’, Curves, Water & Ice and Maricopa Mountain Plumbing. Bank of America is also accepting donations in Tyler’s name. Any club or organization’s help in sending Tyler to the nation’s capital would be gratefully accepted.
