The Maricopa Elementary School Social Committee played hosts to students and their grandparents at the second annual Grandparents Day Breakfast in the school’s courtyard.

The Sept. 12 event was an opportunity for teachers and students to honor those who make a difference in the lives of children. It was a time for the boys and girls to share that first meal of the day with those they hold dear.

Martha Bailey said it was a pleasure to be there with her grandson, Cody, who was sitting nearby wearing a big smile.

“I like having my grandma here at school with me,” Cody said.

“It’s wonderful to see so many grandparents with their grandchildren,” first grade teacher Nancy Guggisberg said. “We wanted to honor the wisdom and support provided by these wonderful people who play such an influential role in the lives of our students.”

The invitation sent by the committee included a quote from an unknown source: “To the world you might be one person, but to one person you might be the world.”

Teacher Pam Klein helped welcome the grandparents to school. “It’s great to see the kids show off their grandparents,” she said.

“The students helped a great deal in making this celebration a success, and we couldn’t have done it without them,” Guggisberg said.

Shirley Shorey, a grandmother of five, was surprised by the high turnout.

“What a great way to say thank you to all the grandparents, some of whom volunteer at the school,” Shorey said. “I’m enjoying this time with my kids on such a beautiful morning.”***ADVERTISEMENT***
