It was whacky. It was weird. Most of the time, it was downright funny.

The Harlem Ambassadors, a traveling group that performs basketball shows around the globe, took to the gymnasium court Monday evening at Maricopa High School to face off against community members in a crazy four-quarter matchup filled with skits, tricks and lots of dancing.

Proceeds went toward the Maricopa Rotary Club, the group hosting the event.

“We were thrilled by the way the community supported us,” said Eric Brown, a Rotary Club member and pastor of Journey United Methodist Church.

Brown said the fire marshal estimated an attendance of about 500 people at the event. Proceeds will go mainly toward the club’s scholarship program for graduating seniors at Maricopa High School. Other funds will be used for swimming pool maintenance. As of Tuesday morning, a final total of funds raised had not been calculated.

The 20-plus community member team, named The Copa Crew, included Mayor Christian Price and Vice Mayor Edward Farrell. The Crew displayed some great team work and good ball-handling, but it was no match against the five-member Ambassadors.

They overtook the Copa Crew with a final score of 81-36.
