Middle school issues second uniform survey

The recent controversy over whether to have uniforms or a standardized dress code for grades 6-8 next year ended in a 4-2 vote by the Maricopa Wells Site Council in favor of uniforms (see related story).

The group had previously surveyed parents, teachers and students on their attitudes and feelings regarding the uniform (specific colors and clothes) or uniform dress code issue.

Some of the current uniform dress code mandates for boys include certain colors and types of clothing. Uniforms are currently worn by students in grades K-5.

“We have continued to receive a great deal of input regarding support of dress code and of uniforms. This is fabulous! Please know that your ideas and opinions are being heard,” said Maricopa Wells Principal Stephanie Sharp in a recent message to parents.

She added, “We want to make certain to capture everyone’s thoughts before any final decisions are made and want to make sure that all the information is fully conveyed, so we will be reissuing a second survey.”

This additional survey will be available online and in paper form. This will be a broader-based survey to include anyone (online format) in the community who may wish to enroll their students here in the future, as well as those students in the elementary grades who may be middle school students in the next few years.

The survey, which began last Friday as a paper sent home with current middle schoolers, will end on Friday, March 30. All information will be presented to district administration and the MUSD Governing Board for a fully informed outcome.

“We thank you for your continued support as this is researched further and welcome your ideas and suggestions,” said Sharp. She can be reached via email or at (520) 568-7103.
