Mining District tour scheduled for April 6

Maricopa residents can still reserve their spots for the final tour in the Experience Pinal County series sponsored by the Friends of the Library and the Chamber of Commerce.

On Monday, April 6, tour guests will leave from the public library promptly at 8 a.m. to board a shuttle bus for a tour of the historic eastern Pinal County Mining District. The group will return to Maricopa at 4 p.m.

Leaving Maricopa, the tour will take residents for a drive through Florence, Superior, and then south to view the Ray Mine pit. Through Hayden and on to Kearny, the group will stop at the ruins of old Kelvin to tour the restored Kelvin schoolhouse.

Tour members will enjoy a box lunch at the General Kearny Inn. Then it’s on through ranch country to the Triangle Bar Ranch for a history lesson on the great Indian Settlement of 1873. After that the tour continues to the town of Mammoth and through Oracle before heading to Florence on the Pinal Parkway and then back to Maricopa. Wildflowers may be blooming along the route.

The tour is appropriate for adults and does involve walking. Cost for the shuttle bus is $25 per person, which must be paid at the Chamber of Commerce office when reservations are made. The box lunch will be $9-$10 per person.

This will be the final event in the Friends of the Library and Maricopa Chamber’s of Experience Pinal County series. Previous tours have taken Maricopa residents to Pinal Energy and Global Water, the 6th annual Gourd Festival in Coolidge, historic downtown Florence, the Maricopa Agricultural Center and the Leaf and Feather Farm.
