Maricopa Police arrested seven people during a Saturday night DUI detail Nov. 17. Eight MPD officers made a total of 54 stops resulting in seven arrests and 49 additional citations.

According to Maricopa Police Department, the average blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of those arrested was .20, two and a half times the legal limit of .08, and three of the drivers had prior convictions.

Two of the arrests were for Extreme DUI, signifying a BAC of .15 or more, and two were for Aggravated DUI, a felony imposed when a person commits a third DUI offense within five years, commits a DUI with a suspended license or has a person under 15-years-old in the vehicle at the time of the DUI arrest.

Among the additional citations issued were seat belt violations, child restraint violations and minor consumption.

Chief of Police Patrick Melvin stated that DUI details are successful both when there are lots of stops and no DUI arrests, indicating that people aren’t driving under the influence, and when there are arrests because it “gets (dangerous) people off the streets.”

“Any Friday or Saturday night when there are no collisions is a success,” Melvin said.

And this night was no exception.
