Maricopa Unified School District is the most diverse district in the Phoenix area, the most diverse district in Pinal County, and second-most diverse in the state.

“Diversity is one of our greatest strengths. Our entire community benefits beyond measure from the rich tapestry of races, cultures and backgrounds, that our students and families bring to our schools each day,” said MUSD Supt. Tracey Lopeman.

Lopeman recently informed the Maricopa City Council that MUSD was indeed the most diverse district in the Greater Phoenix area.

Of the 9,525 students enrolled at MUSD, the largest number of students – 4,319 – are Hispanic, or 45.34%, the school district’s latest data shows.

The second largest segment of MUSD students are white – 2,337 – or 24.54%.

The remaining breakdown of MUSD ethnicity:

  • 1,498, or 15.73%, are Black.
  • 729, or 7.65%, are two or more races.
  • 371, or 3.90%, are Native American.
  • 205, or 2.15%, are Asian.

The news has been getting around nationwide about MUSD’s growing diversity over the past five years.

The website Niche.com, also called MUSD highly diverse, ranking it at 220th of 11, 549 national school districts. The data Niche.com uses was behind that of MUSD’s administration. The website’s data was only through 2023.

MUSD ranked No. 1 for diversity of Phoenix’s 72 districts, according to Niche.com.

The most diverse school system in Arizona is Grand Canyon Unified School District, which is ranked just above MUSD and located in Grand Canyon Village, Ariz.

There are 15 districts in Pinal County and 181 in Arizona.
