Dr. John Flores was hired in 2008 as district superintendent with a contract that ended on June 30.

In October 2009, he was reassigned to be principal of Santa Cruz Elementary School. Earlier this year, he agreed to sign a contract to stay on as principal at Santa Cruz.

“I do this because I love what I am able to do,” Flores said. “You ask anyone who is in this profession — it’s not for the pay, but it’s something we live for. I will continue on because these children matter to me.”

During the school year, parents and students sometimes see Flores bright and early working as crossing guard and giving words of advice to the students as they start their school day.

“He treats each person who enters the building with respect, always listening with concern,” said Torri Anderson, a parent and vice president of the school board. “My boys came home from school asking about how long it would take to become a ‘doctor’ like Dr. Flores. They were both inspired to higher education and gaining as much knowledge as possible.

“Every child is taught they can achieve their dreams with hard work and focus. We are lucky to have him as a principal and I was relieved to know he would stay at Santa Cruz Elementary. We will all be better because of his humble example.”

Anderson has witnessed students enjoy Flores’ passion for learning, and one of the best characteristics she sees of him, is that he never talks down to a student .

“Successful schools have consistent long-term leadership,” Anderson said. “This helps with establishing expectations and outcomes for the student. Just as with parenting, consistency encourages stability and confidence.”

Members of the Santa Cruz staff also are among those thankful Flores will be returning to MUSD and Santa Cruz.

“I have been in Maricopa district for 25 years,” said Linda Sturr, a fourth-grade teacher at Santa Cruz. “I have worked for some fine principals. I respect and admire Dr. Flores for the amazing work and support he gives his teachers and staff.  He really cares what happens to the children and strives to make sure they get the best education possible.”

MUSD Human Resources Director Tom Beckett said because his credentials, Flores could have found a new job elsewhere. Yet, despite the opportunities out there, Flores has always been committed to the children and parents of Santa Cruz, Beckett said.
