The Sequoia Pathway Academy Pumas held their first football game under the lights at the school’s practice field Friday night.

The Purple & Gold game under Coach Demond Williams and staff gave the team the opportunity to gain real-life experience in timing and game speed.

“We want to see how competitive they are as a team,” athletic director Nate Wong said.

The scrimmage gave Williams a chance to view his team’s strengths and weaknesses as well as skill development.

U.S. Olympian and former Patriots cornerback Dewayne Lewis took part in the opening ceremonial coin toss.

Carie Rodgers, whose son Hayden played for the Gold team, said, “I never thought I’d love football as much as I do now. I come to practice and it’s amazing to see how they’ve grown as a team.”

The final score was 48-24 in favor of the Gold team. Fans saw some impressive plays by Arthur Silva, Shawn Yuhas, Riley Murphin, Ray Carroll, Alex Lewis and Sherman Chavaria.

“It was a great experience that was fun and amazing,” Gold team player Devin Nickelson said.

After the game, players showed their appreciation to fans by thanking them for coming and for the tremendous show of support given to the team.

“The dynasty begins, we’ve laid the foundation for football at Pathway,” Williams said. “I’m so proud of the coaching staff, the fans. And, our goal is to get better in time for our first game of the upcoming season this fall.”
