A crowd of more than 40 rambunctious Maricopa High School fans helped to cheer the boys’ soccer team to a 5-0 victory against visiting Florence on Monday night. The win wrapped up the region title for the Rams.

Maricopa got out to a quick start, going up 2-0 in the first half despite a bone-chilling wind and continued to turn up the heat in the second half with three more goals.

Leading the way for the Rams were Francisco Flores and Irving Garcia with two goals apiece.

“Our players stepped up and played a great game,” said coach Jack Berg.

The Rams were able to pull off the lopsided victory despite two of their stars, Sammi Flores and Carlos Saucedo, playing limited minutes due to injuries.

Up next for Maricopa is a road game against Miami at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The Rams defeated Miami earlier in the season 21-0.

“We are going to try to get some of our junior varsity players some minutes in the last game and prepare for the playoffs,” Berg said.
