Rams hoping Bulldogs are tame this Friday night

Looking to get back on track following last week’s 31-19 loss at home to Fountain Hills High, the Maricopa High Rams travel to Safford this Friday evening for a 7 p.m. gridiron contest against Safford High.

Maricopa (3-3) ran into a Fountain Hills (2-4) defense that held star running back Matt Fierros to only 40 yards on the ground. Just a week earlier, Fierros rumbled for 240 yards in a win over Empire High.

Asked what he talked about with his team following the loss to Fountain Hills, Maricopa High head coach Tyler Brandt said, “We discussed attitude and execution. We will continue to work on getting better at what we do.”

Maricopa will meet a Safford team that is struggling at 1-5 to date. The Bulldogs have been outscored 194-84 so far this season. Safford, which sports 17 seniors on its roster, fell at Santa Cruz Valley last Friday by a 40-7 score.

Safford’s only win in 2007 was a 34-14 victory at Willcox. The Bulldogs dropped their season opener at Blue Ridge by a 58-3 score.

“Safford has a history of having tough kids and great sports teams,” Brandt noted. “They will come at us with both barrels on Friday night. They have excellent skill players and run a wide open offense.”

After this game, Maricopa will be home the next two weeks, and then finish up on the road at Globe on Oct. 26.
