Maricopa residents prefer keeping green street signs over the city’s new brown ones, according to InMaricopa’s weekly poll.

Of the 177 votes responses to the poll, 107 supported keeping street signs green while 70 said they liked the brown signs.

The city has been dumping its old green street signs at major intersections over the last few weeks. They are being replaced with newer, brown ones that feature the city’s logo.

This isn’t a new project. The replacement signs are part of the city’s regular maintenance, according to city spokesperson Monica Williams.

The brown replacements were originally discussed in 2017 work sessions at City Hall and were originally funded through a $430,000 grant funded by the Highway Safety Improvement Program, which required them to be either green or brown.

Some reader responses to the question on Facebook:

  • Thomas Coppola: “Everything else is Brown out there!”
  • Vicki Rubalcaba: “Green of course. Why ask us if you are already changing them? Rather see $ go elsewhere as usual.”
  • Bejean Page: “You can still see the white letters at night. The green are just ugly.”
  • Barbara Price: “The brown does seem to be harder to see and read.”
  • Ron Rash: “Who dreams up this stuff? Street signs need to be easy to read… leave them alone, or make them bigger and green.”
