Their rivalry is friendly but fierce, and this week the girls get the edge in spring sports at Maricopa High, according to MaxPreps — but it’s close.

The Lady Rams’ softball team (18-4) has cracked the state top 20 in the Class 6A conference. MaxPreps has them ranked 19th.

The Rams’ baseball team (8-3), hoping to end a lengthy playoff drought, cracked the MaxPreps top 25 in 6A, ranking 24th.

“The softball team, those girls are always competing with us, talking trash to us,” said Dante Westmiller, a co-captain of the baseball team.

The first official ranking from the Arizona Interscholastic Association – the rankings that really matter because they are used for playoff selection – are due out on March 28 for softball and baseball.

The softball team, on a six-game winning streak, has home games in the coming week on Tuesday vs. Laveen Cesar Chavez (6-8) and the following week on April 4 vs. Avondale West Point (7-7). First pitch for both games is 3:45 p.m.

The baseball team, which has won five of its past six games, plays at home in the coming week on Wednesday vs. Laveen Cesar Chavez (5-7), and the following week on April 6 vs. Avondale West Point (5-6). First pitch for both games is 4:30 p.m.
