The City of Maricopa Parks, Recreation and Libraries (PRL) Department is proud to announce that registration is now open for the 2nd Annual Parent-Child Fishing Derby Presented by Fry’s Marketplace.

Registration began on Tuesday, July 25, and the event is limited to the first 150 children to sign up. The PRL Department recently named Councilman Steve Baker and Orbitel Communications as Diamond Level Sponsors for the event and The Communicator as a Gold Level Sponsor.

The event features 150 children, ages 5 to 13, participating in a catch-and-release fishing tournament. Each child will receive a fishing kit complete with rod, reel, lures, Power Bait, weights and bobbers, a brand new tackle box and a shiny gold medal. Fry’s Marketplace of Maricopa is donating the kits. Councilman Baker has graciously donated 150 tackle boxes loaded with all sorts of fishing goodies. Orbitel Communications will serve as the official prize sponsor of the event.

“I’m excited to be one of the sponsors of this event,” Councilman Baker noted. “This was an idea I came up with last summer and, thanks to the hard work and planning of our PRL Director Marty McDonald, the event has really grown into something that’s the talk of the town. I’m a big believer in family values, and this Fishing Derby is a great family event.”

In addition to fishing, children will have the opportunity to win one of 10 BMX-style racing bikes, super soaker water guns and other exciting prizes. The event will also feature prizes for adults, including a brand new BBQ grill as well camping and fishing gear.

The event will be topped off with a good old-fashioned BBQ provided by Fry’s Marketplace. Event attendees will dine on bratwursts, hot dogs, chips, cookies, water and soda.

“This event is a tremendous family event,” McDonald commented. “It seems families today are always on the go, always programmed to do some type of activity. This is a great chance to come out as a family, do some fishing at the new park and help us create community through people, parks and programs.”
