The Maricopa Unified School District committee charged with coming up with the name for the city’s new high school presented its recommendations to the MUSD governing board on Wednesday, Nov. 10. The board discussed the options – Pecan Groves, Vekol and Sonoran Sunrise – and opted to study the names, or alternatives, further before making a final decision.

We asked our readers to weigh in on the proposed choices and there was a clear winner, but it was probably not the result the district was looking for.

This week’s question was, “Which of the proposed names for the city’s second high school is your favorite?” The winner was “None of the above,” tallying 408 or the 728 votes, or 56%. The winner among the proposed names was Pecan Groves, with 200 votes or 27.5%, followed by Sonoran Sunrise at 93/12.8%. Vekol was the least popular choice at 27 votes and 3.7%.

The district will take up the issue again at its next meeting on Dec. 8.
