A water-main break in Province on Friday afternoon disrupted water service and forced closure of several streets due to flooding.

Global Water Resources, the city’s only water service, reported a water break on Province Parkway between Heavenly and Candyland places beginning at noon. This caused flooding along northbound lanes and traffic to be redirected. Some nearby schools closed early, including Legacy Traditional School.

Jon Corwin, vice president and general manager of GWR, said the break was the result of a crack in a 16-inch water pipe which caused large volumes of water to flow into the street. As to what caused the crack, Corwin said that was still under investigation.

“It’s always hard to identify a direct cause,” Corwin said. “We’re still digging down to the pipe to see if there’s any obvious sign of something that caused the failure.”

Residents from several areas around the city reported on social media they were experiencing low water pressure. Water service in some areas was restored by 1:15 p.m.

As for any additional disruptions to services related to the main break, Corwin said no future outages were anticipated.

“The system is looped, meaning there’s multiple ways for the water to get to different places,” Corwin said. “Just that section of pipe may be out of service but it’s not affecting any homes. Once it’s repaired and disinfected, everything will go back to normal.”
