Wickenburg nets win over Rams in scholastic volleyball play

Progress is apparent for the Maricopa High girls’ volleyball team. Now head coach Paul Olson would like to see that progress transpire into some wins.

The Rams dropped a 25-9, 25-15, 25-14 decision to host Wickenburg this past Thursday evening. “We lost in three games, but the scores do not reflect how well we played,” Olson said.

According to Olson, Wickenburg was an extremely talented and experienced team. “We made them work for almost every point and even managed to sustain a couple of runs against them,” Olson said. “For the first time this season, the girls came together as a team and supported each other for an entire match.”

Olson noted the play of Liz Hernandez and Caroline Faven, who shared the Libero duties and got the offense going with great passing. Captain Madison Savoy led the hitters with four kills.

Maricopa next plays at home on Thursday, Sept. 13 vs. Tucson Empire at 6 p.m..

The Ravens have dropped their first three matches of the season to Ray High, Benson High and Bisbee High.

Maricopa, meantime, will look to break into the win column and go from there.

“Losses are always disappointing, but a lot of good things happened (Wickenburg match) that can be built on as we enter our regional season,” Olson added.
