Green thumb classes begin this week

University of Arizona instructor Rick Gibson is looking to turn the brownest of thumbs green through a series of classes being hosted at the University’s Maricopa Agricultural Center, 37860 W. Smiith-Enke Rd.

“Everyone who goes through these classes will have a better understanding of what it takes to grow a plant in the desert,” he said.

The classes, which begin Sept. 1, last 12 weeks and meet every Wednesday night from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Each night will present a different topic, ranging from soil to citrus, and Gibson will bring in a field specialist for many of the offerings.

“We are going to dive in depth to every topic,” Gibson said.

Once the classes are completed, students will receive a certificate and the option to become a certified master gardener volunteer.

The cost of the classes is $110 per couple, and those interested can enroll anytime.
