Meet the teacher: Ana Cozby

Say hello to Maricopa Elementary second grade teacher Ana Cozby.

Cozby is a third year teacher, with two of those years at Maricopa Elementary. Before taking the job at Maricopa Elementary, Cozby taught a third grade class in Charlotte, North Carolina.

While some may view inexperience as a weakness, Cozby views it as strength. “Since I am younger than most of the other teachers, I am able to relate my experiences in school to the children of today,” Cozby said.

Even though she is young, Cozby has been around children the majority of her life. “When I was a child I was part of my grandmother’s daycare center and helped her take care of the kids,” Cozby said.

Besides helping her grandmother, Cozby added that she has always had jobs involving children. Her resumé of jobs involving children includes babysitter, day care worker and camp counselor.

From these beginnings Cozby formed a love for children, and becoming a teacher was the logical next step. ” It makes my day to see children smile and learn and have fun,” Cozby said.

Cozby’s approach to teaching is to offer structure and guidance. “I like to get to the students level by providing an environment where they feel like they are comfortable to be themselves. I also like to do a lot of hands-on activities where kids can really use what they are learning and apply it to their lives outside of school,” Cozby said.

The one value that Cozby said she hopes her students pick up from her is patience. “If you are not patient, you will not have the energy to pursue your education,” Cozby said.

When she is not teaching, Cozby likes to sit by the pool and relax.
