Angela Manzer of A Leg Up Tutoring obtained her Maricopa business license in July and is offering tutoring classes to help students who are beginning to show frustration with their academics or those wanting to jump ahead.

The Homestead subdivision resident is also offering an arts and crafts program at her house to give parents an option for after-school activities for their kids. She offers her instruction as a long-term tutoring program to assist students of any age.

“Education fosters independence, tolerance and change,” Manzer said. “That is why it should be any individual’s No. 1 priority. I want to give back to my community and I feel every child from every background should have access to a well-rounded, in-depth education that can open the right doors for them as adults.”

Manzer majored in social and behavioral sciences at San Jose State University in California and has also worked with children in special education. She moved to Maricopa in October and believes tutoring is “the extra step” in a child’s education.

“Everyone has a different way of learning, different strengths and weaknesses in academics, I simply help them find their strengths and overcome their weaknesses by letting them explore the possibilities of learning through mediums such as art, food, music, theater, outdoors and more,” Manzer said. “I also teach solid study habits, writing skills and reinforce the idea of researching for the answers rather than waiting for someone to give it for you.”

Manzer also understands in today’s economy parents are working more and may be unable to spend enough time reviewing their child’s school assignments. She wants to work with parents to help guide the students in the right direction.

“Today everything costs more, which means you need two incomes just to meet the bare minimum of the household needs,” Manzer said. “Parents can't always be there to help with their children's homework, or give them the extra education that children need these days to be successful adults and that's where tutoring comes in.”
