AARP to offer free tax preparation service

53

AARP/TaxAide is opening a new site in Maricopa for preparation of 2009 federal and Arizona tax returns. The site will open Feb. 1, located in the Maricopa Town Center Building, 44870 W. Hathaway Avenue, Ste. 6, next to the Maricopa Chamber of Commerce.

The tax site will be open every Monday until April 12 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and no appointment is necessary. All tax returns are computer-prepared using software supplied by the Internal Revenue Service and are electronically filed. The service is free.

Volunteer preparers receive 30 hours of classroom training and must pass an exam. Preparers are trained on the latest changes in both federal and Arizona tax law and can handle most ordinary tax return situations, including Social Security and pension income, and capital gains from sales of stock. More complicated returns will be referred to paid tax preparers for assistance.

Be sure to bring a copy of last year’s tax returns, all W-2 and 1099 forms from employers, Social Security and other payers, dependent-care information, receipts for itemized deductions, property tax information and Social Security cards for yourself and all dependents.

Volunteer opportunities are still available for people who have a background or interest in tax preparation and who enjoy helping people. Formal tax preparation training begins Jan. 19.
