Maricopa Unified School District (MUSD) will soon have its own Gifted Advisory Council.

The council will consist of parents and professionals interested in promoting gifted education opportunities within the district. The council will function in an advisory capacity to the curriculum director, the district’s Leadership Team and the school board.

According to Dr. JoEtta Gonzales, district curriculum director, “The council’s task is to build positive partnerships among the school board, schools, teachers, administration and parents to support gifted education services and to advocate for future programming needs.”

The group will review research on gifted learners and provide feedback on gifted education programming.

There will be an informational meeting on Thursday, Sept. 27, at 4 p.m. in Room 3 of the old Santa Cruz Elementary School campus on Honeycutt Ave. Applications for two or three-year terms on the council will be distributed and accepted through Oct. 10. Notification of selection will be by Oct. 11.

On Oct. 25 the council will meet for the first time.
