Multiple fire agencies were on scene Tuesday in response to a dangerous chemical mix at the Ak-Chin Water Treatment Plant on Farrell Road west of John Wayne Parkway.

No injuries were reported after two employees accidentally mixed two chemicals together that produced harmful fumes. Standard operating procedures dictate that nearby fire departments send emergency response crews to provide aid.

“There isn’t an update on his condition currently, but one employee was taken to the hospital as a precaution,” Ak-Chin Community spokeswoman Rachel Brockway said.

There is no remaining danger from the accident.

“This is a pretty rare thing,” said Bart Smith, another spokesman for the Ak-Chin Community. “It’s unfortunate that some chemical containers look very similar.

“It was a mistake and will be handled internally.”

Mutual-aid units were sent from Chandler, Gila River, Tempe, Phoenix and Sun Lakes.

Initial reports suggested a “serious leak” of sodium chloride – used in softening water – that can be harmful in a gaseous state.
