Baptist church hosts Motorsports Day

Over 70 classic cars, dragsters and even speed boats lined the parking lot at the First Annual Maricopa Motorsports Day hosted by the First Baptist Church Saturday. With songs from all eras blasting over the public address system, a home styled game of “Name That Tune,” and free gifts of Hot Wheels for the kids, the day offered something for everyone.

The event was the brainchild of Steve Barcak, a Pontiac enthusiast who had five vehicles on display himself. With immediate access to John Wayne Parkway, he felt the location of the church would be ideal so he approached the leadership of the church with the idea of hosting it.

“The church has been so accommodating in helping me plan this thing. They’ve just been great about everything,” Barcak said. And allowing the various cars to park on the lot was just the beginning. They were also serving up barbeque sandwiches, burgers, soda pop and water to anyone who was hungry or thirsty.

In the front of the lot was there was also a “car bash” being hosted by the youth group of the church. For only 50 cents, you could take out your frustrations on the car and help provide money for the group to attend Acquire the Fire, a youth-oriented conference coming to Phoenix in November.

It was impossible to tell how many people were in attendance at the free event, but, as Barcak noted, “This is about getting the chance to fellowship with others. And if I get to see some really nice cars, too, that’s even better.”
