Barber sets up shop at Guy and Gal Hair Salon

He has cut the hair of well-known sports figures such as former Phoenix Sun Eddie Johnson and the Baltimore Orioles’ Albert Belle, and now he wants to cut yours too.

This man is Cedric Neal, and he is believed to be the newest practicing barber in Maricopa.

Neal recently set up shop in Maricopa at Guy and Gal Hair Salon where he rents a chair.

“We had a lot of customers coming in and asking for a barber, and when we heard Cedric was looking for a chair, we were happy to have him,” said salon owner Sunny Matsunaga.

Neal’s station stands out from the rest with its small, flat-screen television tuned to ESPN.

“I hope to create that old barber shop feel where guys can come, get a shave or a cut and talk about things you wouldn’t hear in a beauty shop,” Neal said.

Already, he’s serviced the likes of Anthony Blakes, who doubles as a Harlem Globetrotter and Maricopa resident.

As a barber, Neal can cut hair, trim beards and perform shaves.

The difference between a barber and a cosmetologist is that a barber’s job starts from the neck up and a cosmetologist can work the entire body.

Neal cut hair at Esquire Barber shop in downtown Phoenix for two years before renting a chair in Maricopa. He received his barber training at Roffler-Moler Hair Styling School in Marietta, Ga.

“I got my license as a master barber in the state of Georgia,” Neal said, explaining that they don’t have a master barber license in Arizona.

Neal is available between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Appointments aren’t necessary, but suggested for those who might need to get in and out on a particular schedule.

“You might want to call in if you don’t have time to wait because I take my time with the customer to make sure they get the service they deserve,” Neal said.
