Body found near Express Stop gas station

The body of a Native American man was found Tuesday afternoon near the Express Stop gas station and Old Stage Stop Marketplace on John Wayne Parkway.

Police responded around 2:30 p.m. to a report of a body that was discovered.

Maricopa Police Department spokesman Ricky Alvarado said authorities do not suspect foul play.

The man was found in an area behind Stage Stop where people have been known to go drink after purchasing alcohol at the gas station, Alvarado said. While alcohol might have played a role, a medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Police found I.D. on the man and were able to determine his race, he said. Authorities are contacting local Native American communities to track down next of kin.

Alvarado said the man appeared to be homeless.
