An alcohol-fueled fight over the price of dog food led to a Maricopa man’s arrest on a domestic violence assault charge.

In a probable cause statement, Maricopa police reported Tuesday that Jeremy Crafts, 25, was driving back to Maricopa from Tempe with his girlfriend in the passenger seat when the fight broke out over the cost of kibbles.

She told police Crafts was drunk, and when the dog-food fight erupted he backhanded her to the face, causing her to bleed.

He first smacked her cell phone out of her hand, causing her to scream, “Why did you do that!” and “What the heck!”

That led to Crafts’ backhand shot to his girlfriend’s face, police said.

When interviewed by police in the Fry’s supermarket parking lot on John Wayne Parkway, Crafts confirmed most of his girlfriend’s story, contending she struck him back “five or six times” while inside the car.

She sought medical attention at Exceptional Community Hospital in Maricopa.

Crafts was placed into police custody on the misdemeanor assault charge that carries a penalty of up to six months in jail.
