Desert Star Gymnastics offers summer camps for kids

Parents struggling to find summer activities for their children can now enroll their children in summer camps at Desert Star Gymnastics.

The local gymnastics center is offering summer camps, twice a day and four days a week, aimed at boys and girls ages 6 and older.

Each class is two-and-half hours long and features three activities. For boys, the classes include 40 minutes each of wrestling, agility and karate, while the girls get the same time span of cheer, dance and gymnastics.

However, Amy Bratlie, Desert Star’s director, said girls could participate in boys classes and boys in girls classes if they want to.

“For the wrestling, we would have to find the girl a girl partner, but that should not be difficult,” she said.

Bratlie said she decided to offer the classes because of a lack of things for children to do in Maricopa.

In addition to the summer camps, Desert Star offers an open gym to children 6 and under 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fridays, which costs $4 for members and $6 for non-members. The same open gym is available to children older than 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. Fridays and cost $7 for members and $10 for non-members.

Membership into the gym currently cost $20.

“These are some really great camps and they are going to be a lot of fun,” Bratlie said.
