Maricopa wasn’t short on pizza for long — the old crust couldn’t rise to the occasion, but after just a few weeks, a new local pizzeria known for its fluffy, buttery-crusted Midwest pies is coming to take over the joint.

Queen Creek-based Vero Chicago Pizza hoisted a banner this morning at the old Dell’s Pizza & Wings Express on John Wayne Parkway.

The family who runs Vero hails from Chicago and opened several restaurants in Illinois before moving to Arizona. Their first Arizona restaurant opened in 2013 in Queen Creek, followed by locations in Chandler, Gilbert, San Tan Valley and Phoenix.

In addition to pizza and wings, the restaurant’s menu also includes sandwiches, salads and appetizers.

The pizza parlor’s website says the Maricopa location is “coming soon” but does not list an opening date.

Dell’s was open just nine months before unexpectedly calling it quits in February. In a statement about the closure, a company spokesperson hinted another Valley pizza restaurant would “soon announce their opening.”
