Housing permits declined last month

The city of Maricopa saw a slight decline in single-family residence construction from March to April as the number of permits pulled fell from 36 to 24.

The number is almost half off the 47 permits issued in April of 2009, which represented the second slowest month for new construction in the past seven months.

This fiscal year, which runs July to June, the city is averaging 36 permits a month compared to the 33.5 permits per month it averaged in the prior fiscal year.

For the 2010 calendar year, the city is averaging 29.5 permits per month. In 2009, the city averaged 33 permits per month.

Money generated from the construction of new homes is one of the revenue sources the city uses when calculating its annual budget. In this current fiscal year, which started in July, the city is operating off the expectation of 15 permits per month.
