Pastor: Get Jesus out of the church

665

Our culture has made us comfortable.

For the most part, and compared perhaps to some other countries, we are comfortable. We are so comfortable we do not want to come out of our houses and mingle with people, nor do we want to get to know one another. We have developed an “us 4 and no more” attitude.

For those of us who are disciples of Jesus Christ, we have allowed this cultural attitude into our church experience.

We have become comfortable in our churches. We are more comfortable with our Christian friends, engaging in our Christian activities and living our Christian lifestyles, that we do not want to come out of the comfort zone, our churches.

And, if we happen to be placed outside of that zone, we find ourselves uncomfortable …

Shakespeare once described a man thusly, “He wears his faith as the fashion of his hat.” Too often, some Christians are like that … if it is fashionable to be a faithful Christian, then they are. It not, then they are not.

So consequently, what we have done, in my opinion, is trapped Christ inside the churches. If we want anyone to experience Christ, we try to get them into the church. Into our comfort zone.

American Christianity has produced in us an affinity for our comfort zone — the church.
