In a bright gym adorned with golden balloons and tulle streamers, Maricopa’s senior citizens danced the night away at the city’s inaugural senior prom Thursday evening.

Approximately 100 attendees cut a rug to golden oldies for several hours at Copper Sky’s gym. Guests ate a dinner served by Roots Eatery and partook in some music trivia between some serious dancing.

Sticking with the “Dancing to the Decades” theme, attendees did the Twist and slow danced to a variety of tunes from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s.

“We’re only just getting started,” said Georgia Lago between dances.

By night’s end, she was dancing barefoot with her husband, Jerry. The pair were eventually crowned prom king and queen for dancing nearly nonstop.

Couples weren’t the only ones present at the event. Large friend groups laughed and danced in circles together, exhibiting incredible energy for people entering their golden years.

“It’s important to enjoy nights like this,” said Jeanne Crosslin, a member of a grief group at Maricopa Senior Center. She attended with several other widows from the group.

“I want more events like this,” she said.
