The search for the remains of 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley at the Butterfield Landfill west of Maricopa is in its 12th week.

Investigators believe the Glendale girl was killed and thrown into a Tempe trash receptacle.

While there have been no injuries to workers searching the landfill, the Glendale Police Department is preparing itself for hot weather.

GPD spokeswoman Tracey Breeden said the department is making sure personnel stay hydrated and there are fire department medics on site.

Searchers start at 6 a.m. and finish by noon, she said, and the FBI has brought in air-conditioning units for the tents to keep workers cool.

Breeden said search personnel remain optimistic they will find the child’s remains.
