Electrician in it for long haul

After 30 years in the electrical business, Larry Larrabee, owner of Desert Valley Electric in Maricopa, said he has a great career and isn’t planning to leave the trade anytime soon.

Larry and his wife Peggy moved to Maricopa in 2006 and plan on staying here.

“We like the smaller town atmosphere,” Larrabee said. “We love the people.”

Larrabee is a third-generation contractor who began working in 1970 for his father and uncle’s construction business in Scottsdale.

“When you’re a young man and you go to work for your dad, you do whatever. I started out digging ditches,” Larrabee said.

In 1980, Larrabee started his first electrical company in Southern California and moved his business to Arizona in 1994.

Although the recession has hurt his business, Larrabee said his Maricopa clientele is growing. “It’s about building relationships.”

Most of Larrabee’s customers come from referrals, and he said it is the quality of his workmanship and fair pricing that makes his business stand out above the others.

“My work speaks for itself,” Larrabee said. “Electricity is one of those trades that if it is done right, it works for a long time.”

Since the recession hit, Larrabee has shifted the focus of his business from wiring of new properties to home servicing. His services include electrical inspections, fixing dead or shorted circuits, ceiling fan installations, security lighting, power consumption testing and remodeling.

“You hear a lot of businesses always saying no job is too small, and that’s true in our case,” Larrabee said. “We cater to everyone.”

With two part-time employees, Larrabee has wired thousands of homes and continues to service the entire Valley.

“We’re here for the long haul,” Larrabee said. “We love the people.”
