Legacy Traditional School finally getting permanent home

After several delays over the past two years, Legacy Traditional School is slated to have a permanent campus in Maricopa after its developer received the necessary permits and broke ground on Tuesday.

Legacy’s new Maricopa campus will be located at White and Parker Road, just south of Bowlin Road.

“We are going to run two eight-hour shifts a day to get this school built in time,” said Legacy founder Aaron Hale.

Legacy is ending its school year in the next couple of weeks and will be without a home until the new campus is built. While the school won’t host a groundbreaking ceremony similar to last year’s failed school project (see “Pupils dig in to help move dirt for new Legacy Traditional School”), Hale said there would be a celebration of sorts once the school is completed.

“We understand the frustration of parents during the past couple of years and just thank them for staying by our side,” Hale said.

To get the school built, Legacy entered into an agreement with U.S. Charter Development in which the developer will pay for the construction of the facility then lease the space back to the school. The lease also gives Legacy an option to buy.

The new Maricopa charter school will be built in phases, with the first phases scheduled to include 40 classrooms, a gym, sports fields and administrative buildings.

With the construction of the new school, Legacy will also expand its curriculum from kindergarten through eighth grade to include ninth-graders.

“We eventually want to have enough space to do K-12,” Hale said.

Legacy is also expanding south of town, as U.S. Charter is also in the process of building a permanent campus for the school in Casa Grande.

“We are very excited about these new campuses,” Hale said.
